Brand usage guide – what and why

They can be called many different things, but a usage guide or style guide can be an investment into the future of your brand that will inevitably be deployed over a number of media. With typically a number of suppliers used for your design, print and electronic collateral, consistency of your brand is critical. It can easily be a point of failure if left unchecked, but with a usage guide in place, many of the factors can be controlled.

A brand usage guide is a document prepared to outline the:

correct usage of a logo and brand
exact colour breakdowns used in the logo and brand
typeface and font details
and sample collateral.

Just as useful is to visually define the incorrect uses so that these are clearly understood. To supplement the document, various versions of the logo can be stored along side the usage guide on your own website to ensure that no supplier uses an incorrect version.

With this set-up, any supplier can be provided a link that will answer many of the initial questions they might have, and provide them with a single place to retrieve what they need when they need it.
